Powering Scotland’s First Megawatt eTruck Charging Infrastructure

John G Russell Group Powers Ahead with Scotland’s First Megawatt eTruck Charging Infrastructure — in Partnership with Cleaner Group and Optimo Energy

Back in July, John G Russell Group has announced a major step forward in fleet electrification, partnering with amphos. group to deliver Scotland’s first Megawatt Charging System (MCS), a landmark project that sets a new benchmark for heavy goods vehicle (HGV) decarbonisation in the UK as part of the ZenFreight consortium.

At Optimo Energy, we’re proud to be part of delivering Scotland’s first megawatt-scale eTruck charging hub via ZENFreightUK at John G Russell in Glasgow.

To support this, we are partnering with amphos. group, who are delivering the full turnkey installation covering all on-site works, as well as the design and installation of a new Point of Connection (PoC as part of the ICP works).

Smart Charging at Megawatt Scale

The system, capable of delivering up to 3.75 MW of direct current charging, will allow Russell Group’s eTrucks to charge from 0–80% in as little as 31 minutes - transforming charging downtime into operational efficiency.

Optimo Energy’s intelligent platform will forecast, schedule, and optimise charging sessions across the site, ensuring each vehicle is ready to roll while enabling participation in energy flexibility markets to unlock additional value.

Driving the Future of Clean Logistics

What makes this project particularly exciting is how intelligently the infrastructure has been designed. With real-time charging optimisation, active energy constraint management, and access to flexibility markets, this isn’t just about powering vehicles; it’s about building commercially resilient, future-proof operations.

As fleets across the UK and Europe prepare for a zero-emission future, Russell Group, Cleaner Group, and Optimo Energy are leading the charge, both literally and figuratively.

Arron Dowie, CCO at amphos., commented:

“This is exactly the kind of project we love being involved in. It proves that fleet electrification can be operationally robust and commercially smart at the same time. Working alongside Optimo and John G Russell Group has been a genuine pleasure, and it’s exciting to see megawatt charging move from concept to reality.”

Daniel Homoki-Farkas, Co-Founder and CEO of Optimo Energy, commented:

“Projects like this show what’s possible when energy, software and fleet operations are aligned. We’re incredibly excited to be working with amphos to bring megawatt charging to life and demonstrate how electrified fleets can unlock real operational and commercial value.”
